Linwood Wins CHBA National SAM Award
Regionally-based Linwood Homes Ltd. has received a prestigious SAM award for Most Outstanding New Custom Home Between 2,500 to 4,000 Sq. Ft., awarded by the Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA). Linwood was also a finalist in the Under 2,500 Sq. Ft. Category.
“Winning a National SAM Award is the highest recognition of excellence in our industry,” said John Hrynkow, President of the CHBA. At the CHBA’s recent conference in Quebec City, the Association paid tribute to 23 home builders, renovators and developers chosen for excellence in 2008. The annual competition is open to all CHBA national members. An independent panel of judges from across the country reviewed all entries.
Craig McFarlane, Linwood’s Vice President Retail Sales, accepted the award on behalf of Linwood. He designed the 3,236 sq.-ft., post-and-beam home aptly named the Clearview, and oversaw the project from concept to completion. “This home is one of the most spectacular custom design/build projects I’ve worked on in my 22 years with Linwood,” McFarlane said. “The homeowners had wonderful ideas. It was a very exciting and collaborative process.”
The inspiration for the Clearview came from the boathouse the homeowners built on their 360 feet of shoreline, also designed by McFarlane four years earlier. “The boathouse was created to evoke the historic tradition of Muskokan boathouses within the context of today,” said McFarlane. He added of the home, which is located in a desirable lakefront area in Ontario: “It was important to complete the picture with a spectacular, cohesive design.” Aside from the striking Douglas fir timbers and premium Western red cedar characteristic of Linwood custom homes, the 18 ft. x 18 ft. sunroom is memorable with its panoramic lake views. The 34-ft. tall cathedral ceiling in the great room is equally spectacular with its ingenious arrangement of structural beams. Cindy McKellar of Linwood Interiors worked with the homeowners to design the home’s gourmet kitchen and spa-style master bathroom. Mike Parlevliet completed the build.
Linwood’s focus on green building is also reflected in the winning home. Approximately 75% of each Linwood home is made from renewable materials. Linwood homes typically have features such as Energy-Star® rated windows and doors, as well as energy efficient mechanical systems.
“This home was the result of the Linwood team working closely with the homeowners to meet very specific needs,” stated Linwood President William Mascott. He added, “Linwood is unique because we are able to provide customers with the ability to create an outstanding custom-designed home while still taking full advantage of all the benefits offered by one of our home packages.”
