Many options are
also available, including:
• Solid timbers
Linwood supplies Douglas
fir structural beams and posts where solid
timbers are specified.
These beams are
No. 1 and better appearance
grade timbers selected for their structural
integrity, stability and the statement they
make in your home. Douglas fir is preferred
over spruce or pine beams because of their
greater structural strength, pleasing finished
look and resistance to unsightly weather
induced staining.
Beams large enough to
be used to support the roof structure have
very limited availability and cannot be
sourced from retail stores. The reason is
that large diameter logs must be specially
cut and examined for structural flaws as
well as appearance. They are then dried
in a hi-tech radio frequency kiln which
can handle the lengths and thicknesses involved.
All natural wood products
will move and check to some degree. This
process increases the stability of beams
and minimizes any movement during construction.
It also gives a better appearance and allows
for easier finishing.
• Log and log accents
Accents are portions of
the home package that utilize logs as part
of the structure to enhance the aesthetics
of the home. Examples would be porch posts
and beams, covered entries, exterior corner
trims, main structural beams, log railings
and stairs. These components are used in
conjunction with standard framing materials.
Linwood Homes offers three
different species of log. Cedar, Douglas
Fir, and Spruce. Each has their own characteristics
and fall under different pricing categories.
All three can be used for all types of log
construction.
MACHINED: - Cedar and
Douglas Fir logs may be provided in a machined
round profile in 8”, 10” and 12” diameters.
HAND CRAFTED: - Can be
provided in Cedar, Douglas Fir or Spruce.
• Engineered silent floors
Linwood offers a silent
floor system using engineered wood joists.
It is designed to stay strong, stable
and quiet for the life of your
home. Now you can select a flooring system
that resists shrinking, splitting and twisting.
The structural integrity
of the silent floor allows for greater
design flexibility including spans
that would be impossible with conventional
platform flooring. Each engineered floor
is individually designed and then rated
with the TrusJoistPro rating System.
• Decks and railings
Decking material is available
in a variety of options. Tight knot dried
cedar is the best natural alternative for
handrails and decking. Cedar pickets are
popular and commonly used
for railings, sometimes used in conjunction
with tempered glass. In addition Linwood
offers low maintenance composite products.
Decking & railing systems
are more costly than many customers may
realize. This is because the foundation
structure requirements are very similar
to that of the actual house and must consist
of a combination of weather resistant
material and fastening systems.
• Select cedar or pine interior
finishing
Linwood manufactures
its own Cedar and Spruce-Pine
interior paneling and roof boards. Both
Cedar and Spruce-Pine are highly versatile
wood species that can be manufactured into
a wide range of finished and semi-finished
products. Linwood Cedar with its unique
characteristics, small tight knots and soft
texture will enhance the interior of your
great room or studio.
As a contrast we also
can provide Spruce-Pine interior paneling
with its light, bright, clean appearance,
ranging in color from white to pale yellow,
with straight grain, small tight knots and
smooth texture. Both species can be easily
stained to a color of your choice or simply
sealed capturing its natural characteristics
and color.
Typically cedar provides
a richer look while pine gives a lighter
appearance when stained. These products
are often used in vaulted areas where there
is an abundance of natural light.
• Insulation & Drywall
Linwood can supply you
with insulation and drywall.
When choosing insulation
keep the energy efficiency levels
required by local building codes and your
own requirements in mind. Energy efficiency
is measured by the R value rating of the
insulation to be installed. Our homes usually
have a high R value due to the thickness
of the walls and depth of the rafter system.
When the insulation is
in place drywall can be installed. Water
resistant or fireproof drywall may be required
in certain areas. Insulation is relatively
bulky but light while drywall is heavy.
Both products are very susceptible
to water damage and cannot be left
exposed on site.
These products are not
particularly high value and long distance
shipping costs can be significant. This
means that it is generally only economical
to ship these items to remote locations
or countries where the product is not readily
available. Typically installers
like to supply the product once
the basic structure is complete and generally
this is the most economic option for the
homeowner.
